Cashmen (Clarence) | Counsellor and Supervisor(Individuals, Couples, Families)
Introduction
For the past 10 years, I have walked with individuals from all walks of life through their darkest, most anxious, and most complex moments. I don't believe in forcing your unique story into one rigid type of therapy. Instead, we use a pluralistic and systemic approach, meaning we look at your life as a whole—your relationships, your environment, and your natural emotional needs. You are the true expert on your own life. My role is to listen deeply, draw from both my personal and professional experience, and adapt my tools to fit you perfectly.
Gentle Support for Anxiety, Fear & Stress
We also offer a safe space to process the heavy weight of burnout, workplace stress, and past trauma or PTSD. If you are experiencing the unique emotional strain of climate or eco-anxiety, you don't have to face it alone. We can also gently work through the habits that anxiety brings with it, such as exhausting perfectionism, sleep problems caused by a racing mind, and low self-confidence.
Understanding What You Are Feeling
Fear is the sharp, immediate emotional response you feel when you encounter a threat. Phobias occur when that fear becomes so overwhelming and persistent toward a specific object, place, or situation that you will go to great lengths just to avoid it. Whatever combination you are feeling, we will meet it with kindness.
My Therapeutic Tools & Approaches
- Calming the Body & Nervous System: To help calm an overactive fight-or-flight response, we use gentle Somatic Experiencing and Somatic Therapy to release the physical tension that anxiety locks into your body. Polyvagal Therapy helps us directly target your nervous system to ease feelings of panic, while techniques from Havening and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT / Tapping) offer soothing physical inputs to ground you. We also use Sensory Modulation Interventions, which use tailored sensory inputs to help you self-soothe and find immediate calm if you are experiencing severe distress or hyperventilation. We can also draw on Uncommon Knowledge methods and Root Cause Therapy to gently look at the origins of your anxiety.
- Changing Patterns & Reshaping Thoughts: To help you break free from exhausting worry loops, we use warm, step-by-step guidance. This includes gradual Exposure Therapy to help you safely face and overcome specific phobias at your own pace, taking away their power. We use practical tools from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help gently reshape painful thought patterns and manage intense emotions. We also bring in Human Givens Psychology to ensure your fundamental emotional and safety needs are being met, alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Psychoeducation to help you understand how anxiety works.
- Deeper Processing & Lasting Resilience: We blend Mindfulness, Reframing techniques, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy to quiet the inner critic, heal old hurts, and process emotional trauma through supportive talking therapy. Finally, we lean heavily on Positive Psychology and Solution-Focused Therapy. Instead of just focusing on the problem, these approaches help us build on your inherent strengths, restore your sense of belonging, and map out a clear, hopeful, and resilient path forward.
Online therapy
I offer online counseling via Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Although I prefer face-to-face therapy, sometimes circumstances may require sessions to take place via video. Multiple links can be sent to invite all those involved in the counselling process or for a brief attendance. The cost of the session could then be reduced by $15 to $20.

Specialisations and Expertises
Our Specialized Approach to Calming the Mind & Body
- Deactivating Panic & Flashbacks: Using the Rewind Technique, Deep Relaxation, and Reframing, we target the subconscious brain to rapidly reduce the intensity of specific phobias, intrusive memories, and acute panic attacks.
- Somatic & Nervous System Regulation: Through Polyvagal Therapy, we teach you how to shift your body out of chronic "fight, flight, or freeze" modes, lowering the physical tension and exhaustion caused by chronic stress.
- Holistic Māori Well-being: We ground our clinical framework in Te Whare Tapa Whā (Mauri Ora, Tikanga Māori). By balancing your mental (taha hinengaro), physical (taha tinana), family (taha whānau), and spiritual (taha wairua) well-being, we build sustainable resilience against anxiety.
- Actionable Distress Tolerance: Utilizing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, you will learn how to tolerate high-stress moments and regulate intense emotions without turning to avoidant coping mechanisms.
- Solution-Focused & Narrative Recovery: Through Brief Solution-Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy, we help you separate your true identity from the anxiety gripping your life, focusing on practical, forward-looking strategies.
- Couples Navigating Stress: Using Imago Relationship Therapy and the Gottman Method (Developmental Model), we help couples communicate effectively when high stress, hypervigilance, or anxiety creates distance or conflict.
- Family & Parenting Pressures: Utilizing Structural and Strategic Family Therapy, Integrative Systemic Therapy, and Parenting through Separation facilitation, we help families restructure their homes into calm, supportive environments, breaking intergenerational cycles of anxiety.
- Generalized Anxiety & Chronic Burnout: Persistent, uncontrollable worry, brain fog, and stress from work or caregiving roles.
- Panic Disorder & Phobias: Sudden, terrifying physical panic episodes and severe, irrational fears that restrict your daily freedom.
- Trauma-Induced Anxiety: Intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and fear stemming from past sexual abuse, family violence, or sudden trauma.
- Short-Term Targeted Care (4 to 8 Sessions): Best for specific phobias, acute situational stress, or panic management. We focus heavily on immediate relief using the Rewind Technique and Solution-Focused tools.
- Medium-Term Restructuring (12 to 20 Sessions): Suited for chronic generalized anxiety, ongoing relationship stress, or deep-rooted coping habits. Sessions integrate DBT, Polyvagal training, and Te Whare Tapa Whā frameworks.
- Long-Term & Ongoing Systemic Support (20+ Sessions): Formulated for complex trauma, severe family/systemic stressors, or funded long-term recovery plans.

Most common issues I support people with:
- Challenging Negative Thoughts: We target harsh mental habits—like assuming the worst-case scenario—and teach you to reframe them with clarity.
- Breaking the Avoidance Cycle: Running away from fears brings temporary relief but makes them stronger. We guide you to safely face triggers.
- Calming Your Nervous System: Anxiety causes physical panic, like a racing heart. We practice practical grounding techniques to soothe your body.
- Embracing Life's Unknowns: Overthinking and trying to control every outcome creates constant worry. We help you build resilience for life's uncertainty.
- Building Healthy Coping Skills: We work to replace counterproductive habits—like doomscrolling, avoidance, or emotional eating—with sustainable self-care and boundaries.

Fees
Normal 60-minute sessions: $140
Pre-arranged 90-minute sessions: $210
I completely understand that life can be unpredictable, routines get disrupted, and unexpected things come up. If you need to change your appointment, I kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice whenever possible.
Because that hour is reserved exclusively for you, late cancellations or missed sessions may incur a fee. Late cancellations (less than 24 hours) require 50% of the fees unless there is a justifiable emergency. However, a minimum of $40 is expected to pay for costs.
However, I always treat these situations with kindness and care, and we can discuss your specific circumstances together. If you are feeling unwell or unable to travel but still feel up to talking, we can always easily switch your in-person session to an online video call.
